Volunteers sought at Care and Repair Edinburgh

Care and Repair EdinburghAn Edinburgh-based charity is launching a campaign to recruit new volunteers, challenging local people in the capital to ‘change a life in a lunch-break’.

Under the banner, ‘changing a life is as easy as changing a light bulb’, Care and Repair Edinburgh is calling on kind-hearted tradespeople, DIY enthusiasts, retired people wanting to keep active, or younger people looking for hands-on work experience, to help expand the support it gives to communities.

The charity enables older people and people with disabilities to continue to live independently and safely in their own homes through the provision of a wide variety of services.

Those include a volunteer handyperson service, a home from hospital service, small repairs service, adaptations/home improvement service and trades referral service.

To promote their campaign, the team at Care and Repair Edinburgh will be advertising across the city in the weeks ahead. They will also be targeting social media with their own unique video, which explains more about the work of the charity.

Graham Harper, CEO of Care and Repair Edinburgh, said: “This year Care and Repair Edinburgh is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is looking to expand its services. We have a trusted network of experienced and vetted tradespeople and volunteers and an important role in offering a helping hand and a listening ear.

“Our handyperson volunteers really can change lives in their lunch-break and we are looking for more people to join us. However much or little spare time you have, using it to help an older person would mean so much to them. By helping to carry out odd jobs, DIY or something as simple as changing a light bulb, you can help older and disabled people in your community live richer, more fulfilling lives at home because they can retain their independence.”

Care and Repair is looking for volunteers who are:

  • Interested in DIY
  • Technically savvy, who can help older people stay connected with the outside world through PCs, smart phones, digital TVs, Skype etc.
  • If you enjoy a natter, so much the better!
  • Graham added: “Hours are very flexible and can fit around volunteers’ lifestyles. Out-of-pocket expenses are paid and our volunteers tell us they gain a huge amount of satisfaction knowing how much their assistance means to the people they help.

“Our team is a very welcoming and happy one and we look forward to hearing from people who would like to join us.”
