Wheatley Care’s therapy dogs boost mental health services
In an initiative focused on mental health and well-being, the Wheatley Care High Riggs Contact Point in Edinburgh recently introduced two therapy dogs, Diesel and Radar, to its service users.
The initiative, part of a broader strategy to combat loneliness, foster self-confidence and promote self-worth, has been warmly received by the people engaged in the care services.
The therapy dogs, provided by Dugs Paws Dog Adventures and Training, are part of a broader programme of activities designed to help manage anxiety. These activities, accessible to service users in Edinburgh, include music, art, creative writing, drama and karaoke sessions.
Diesel, a seasoned therapy dog with eight years of experience, and Radar, a new recruit at just nine months, are already making a significant positive impact on service users.
Louise Dunlop, managing director of Wheatley Care, said: “The people we work for really enjoyed the session with Radar and Diesel. It allowed them to take their minds off any worries and gave them something to talk about.
“They enjoyed the chance to interact with the dogs and it brought a smile to their faces. It was a great activity and one we hope to do it again in the future.”
Claire Martin, the co-owner of Dugs Paws Dog Adventures and Training, added: “Diesel has been a therapy dog for eight years and he has such a fantastic calm nature.
“We thought it would be lovely to help people from all walks of life in the community. He has visited hospitals, care homes, universities, colleges and work places.
“Radar is nine months old and again has a lovely calm nature and has just started doing therapy visits. If we can help people by bringing the dogs into see them and make one person smile, then they’ve done their job.”
As part of the Wheatley Group, Wheatley Care is a provider of care and support services in Scotland, serving approximately 3500 individuals every week.
