Wheatley Group begins modern apprentice recruitment drive
Wheatley Group has launched a modern apprentice recruitment drive, hoping to recruit 25 youngsters for its two-year programme.
The apprenticeships are funded by Wheatley Foundation, the group’s charitable trust which helps tackle unemployment.
Wheatley’s recruitment drive comes as businesses across the country celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week from 2-6 March.
Lorraine McLaren, Wheatley Foundation director, said: “More than 400 young people have come through our Modern Apprentice programme since it was launched back in 2009.
“The apprenticeships have really made a difference and have helped launch exciting careers in housing and other industries. Young people don’t need any formal qualifications to apply. They’ll be paid a real salary, and get benefits such as travel expenses, 28 days’ holiday and discounts on gym membership and driving lessons.”
Successful candidates will work in Wheatley offices across Scotland, including with GHA, DGHP, Cube, Dunedin Canmore, Loretto Housing, YourPlace and West Lothian Housing Partnership.
They will get on-the-job training in housing offices and business support services such as finance and legal, as they work towards an SVQ qualification.
The modern apprenticeships are open to people aged 16 to 19.
Lewis Munro, 19, from Edinburgh, is a Modern Apprentice working with Dunedin Canmore. He said: “Two years ago I was working part-time in Sports Direct. Now I’m sitting my housing qualifications, learning loads, and working towards a career as a housing officer. Being part of the Modern Apprenticeship programme is easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
Courtney McMahon, 22, from Moodiesburn is a housing assistant at Cube after coming through the programme. She said: “A Modern Apprenticeship was perfect for me. I just wanted to get started at work and throw myself into it. It’s been a brilliant experience. There are also so many opportunities with Wheatley. You can move within the business and try new things. I’d tell anyone to go for it and apply.”
To apply, email ma@wheatley-group.com with your name, date of birth, full postal address and a contact telephone number.
The closing date for applications is Friday 17 April.
