Green-fingered residents living in Glasgow are taking part in a gardening showdown this summer.

Keen gardeners aged 55 and over who live in Wheatley Homes Glasgow or Loretto Housing Association homes supported by the Livingwell Service are getting their hands dirty for a blooming great prize.

Residents have been tasked to make their garden beautiful – with the best one given the title of ‘Glasgow’s Best Garden’. To help support the competition, Wheatley Foundation, part of Wheatley Group, donated towards buying plants, compost and equipment for their communal garden areas. The Foundation will also supply the winning garden team with a voucher and individualised trophy.

Laura Pluck, Wheatley Group’s Group director of communities, said: “Our gardening competition will run through the summer months, with a winning garden announced later this year. We want to encourage our tenants to enjoy the health benefits of gardening while also getting to meet and socialise with their neighbours.”

The gardens will be judged by Wheatley’s Neighbourhood Environmental Team.

Laura Pluck added: “Tenants are telling us they can’t wait to get started. I’m really looking forward to seeing how they transform their gardens.”

Wheatley Care’s Livingwell Service, for people aged 55 and over which offers independent living to people aged 55 and over with staff on-site at planned times several days a week. There are also a wide range of social and leisure activities for tenants.
