Wheatley tenants’ group wins top engagement award

A Glasgow tenants’ group involved in one of Scotland’s biggest regeneration projects has won a prestigious national award.

Wyndford Futures Focus Group picked up the Tenant Team of the Year at the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) Scotland National Good Practice Awards on Friday night.

Presented by Scottish entertainer Michelle McManus, the annual awards showcased excellence in participation and engagement.

Wyndford Futures Focus Group (WFFG), which includes around 30 tenants of Wheatley Homes Glasgow, has been working with Wheatley staff and leading architects on the £100 million regeneration plans for the Maryhill area of Glasgow.

The WFFG, which is co-chaired by tenants Chris Quinn and Henry McLaren, are shaping the masterplan by attending regular meetings and workshops and carrying out community surveys to gather the views of Wyndford tenants, homeowners and the wider neighbourhood. The feedback is then used as part of the draft masterplan for the area.

Chris Quinn said: “We are absolutely delighted to pick up this award on behalf of Wheatley Homes Glasgow tenants and the community in Wyndford. We’ve always believed since the very first meeting that this project was something special as tenants were at the heart of it all and driving positive changes for our community.

“This £100m regeneration will shape our community for the better, not only for the people who live here today, but for families and generations to come.”

The regeneration plans will see 386 new affordable homes built, of which 85% are for social rent and 15% for mid-market, as well as a brand-new, purpose-built community hub.

The plans include £13m already being spent improving existing homes and the environment, including creating new green spaces, paths and security.

Eveline Armour, development and delivery manager of TPAS Scotland, added: “Well done to the Wyndford Futures Focus Group for winning the Tenant Team of the Year Award. The work that has been done to engage tenants in the Wyndford regeneration project is a gold standard exemplar of tenant participation and demonstrates how powerful the tenant voice is.”
