Woodilee Bowling Club secures £14,000 donation
Woodilee Bowling Club in Kirkintilloch is celebrating a £14,000 clubhouse makeover thanks to Persimmon West Scotland and Sanctuary Scotland.
The club, which was founded in 1911, was originally located on the historical grounds of Woodilee Hospital. Following the closure of the hospital in 1999, the club relocated to an outdoor facility in Merkland, thanks to assistance from East Dunbartonshire Council.
In 2021, the club acquired the building in Merkland from the council and immediately set its sights on making improvements to the clubhouse to breathe new life into the facility.
Homebuilder Persimmon West Scotland, who developed new homes on the former hospital site, worked in partnership with local housing association, Sanctuary Scotland, to agree a £14,000 donation for Woodilee Bowling Club that gave the green light to the much-needed renovation project.
The donation was delivered as part of a local community contribution associated with the delivery of affordable housing on Persimmon’s Kelvin Gait development.
The clubhouse was kitted out with new shutters, doors and fixtures to rejuvenate the bowlers’ base.
Chris Logan, Persimmon West Scotland managing director, said: “We were delighted to support the transformation of Woodilee Bowling Club’s facilities.
“We’re committed to working with valued partners like Sanctuary Scotland to leave a positive legacy in the areas we operate in and I hope the improvements to the clubhouse will make a big difference to local members.”
Gillian Lavety, Sanctuary’s development director for Scotland, added: “As well as delivering good-quality new affordable homes, we’re committed to investing in communities and making a positive difference for local people.
“I’m absolutely thrilled that we’ve been able to support Woodilee Bowling Club, and hope these improvements have a positive impact for many years to come.”
David Munro, president of Woodilee Bowling Club, commented: “The Woodilee Bowling Club is grateful to Persimmon Homes West Scotland and Sanctuary for their generous donation.
“Their support has improved our club by enhancing facilities, expanding programs, and connecting a broader audience.”
