Work begins on Aberdeen council’s £30m housing development

Work began on Friday at Aberdeen City Council’s biggest housing project in 50 years.

Once completed, the new £30 million development located on Wellheads Road in Dyce, will house 283 new homes.

The site will include a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom units across four buildings, each five storeys, with green open spaces, outdoor seating and children’s play areas.

Aberdeen City Council has enlisted Ogilvie Construction to build the homes.

The council has also committed to building 2,000 more homes within the next four years.

The Press and Journal reported that there is such a high demand for housing in Aberdeen that there is a current need for more than 6,000 new council homes.

Jenny Laing, Aberdeen City Council co-leader and councillor, said: “The work at Wellheads Road accelerates our ambitious council housing programme, which is already delivering a raft of new homes.

“Improving the quality of life for residents is fundamental to everything this Council does and the provision of high quality, affordable housing offering a range of tenancies is central to that.

“Our Local Outcome Improvement Plan has at its heart place-making and we are committed to creating inclusive communities where people feel connected and valued.”

Donald MacDonald, Ogilvie Construction’s managing director, said: “We are proud to be working with Aberdeen City Council to deliver new housing.“It will provide a quality environment for future residents and the local community.”

Last year, 99 council homes were built at Smithfield and a further 80 nearing completion at Manor Walk.

A further 369 are earmarked for the former Summerhill Academy site and there are plans for more new homes at Tillydrone, Kincorth, Craighill and Greenferns.
