Work begins on new Glenrothes affordable homes
The start of construction of new affordable homes in Glenrothes has been marked by Judy Hamilton, councillor and convener of the community and housing services committee, as she performed the sod-cutting ceremony earlier this week.
The new development is on the site of the former Alan Mclure House care home and is part of Fife Council’s phase three Affordable Housing Programme to deliver 3,500 new affordable houses across all areas of Fife.
Where possible the council aims to put sites and buildings that are no longer being used back into use.
This relatively small site is being put to maximum use by increasing the availability of good quality affordable housing in Glenrothes.
There are seven two-bedroom houses, eleven three-bedroom houses, and two four-bedroom houses.
Ms Hamilton said: “I’m pleased to be celebrating that work is now underway here at Balbirnie. The mix of house types is great for families and will provide 20 high-quality council houses, and combined with the Cullen Drive and Happer Crescent developments will see over 100 new houses built in Glenrothes by Autumn 2020.”
She added: “Fife Council is absolutely committed to meeting the housing needs of communities in Fife and proud to be delivering warmer, drier, healthier homes. The project is part of the much needed high-quality council housing for people across Fife and our Affordable Housing programme is one of the biggest in Scotland.
“In addition to providing more housing, the programme is also about creating jobs and apprenticeships, supporting the Fife economy and the construction industry.”
