Data Protection Officer two day training - SHARE

Who’s it for and what’s it about

Under Data Protection Legislation, all organisations designated as public authorities under Freedom of Information legislation must have a mandatory Data Protection Officer and meet the compliance requirements associated with this role. From 11th November 2019, all Scottish Housing Associations need to comply with this requirement.

This 2-day training course is aimed at providing those individuals designated as mandatory Data Protection Officers within their Housing Associations with the skills and understanding to help them fulfil this statutory role.

It is assumed that attendees will have a basic level understanding of the key concepts and compliance requirements of current data protection legislation and the current state of data protection compliance within their organisations.

Course content

The course will take the form of formal teaching of covered topics, reinforced with practical exercises, discussion and action planning to apply what has been learnt back in the workplace. Topics covered include:

General approaches to:

  • informing and advising senior management and the Board
  • awareness-raising, staff training and supporting a positive privacy culture
  • developing and maintaining a DP compliance programme – compliance monitoring, auditing and performance improvement
  • liaising with data subjects and the UK Information Commissioner
  • integrating privacy into “business as usual”

The DPO role within key areas of compliance including:

  • risk and change management including data protection impact assessments
  • accountability and maintaining records of compliance
  • upholding the rights of data subjects including the right to be informed and the right of access
  • data quality and retention
  • security of processing
  • data breach monitoring, investigation and reporting
  • data sharing, transfer and disclosure

Relationship of the DPO with the organisation as Data Controller:

  • relative roles, requirements and responsibilities of the DPO and the Controller
  • avoiding/handling DPO conflicts of interests
  • resourcing the DPO and the wider DP function

Learning outcomes

This course will:

  • help organisations to take informed and practical action to fulfil compliance requirements related to the mandatory role of Data Protection Officer
  • equip attendees with the skills and understanding to enable them to meet the specific requirements of the DPO role to inform, advise, train and monitor data protection compliance across their organisation
